In this article and video, we'll carefully explore the altered scales (Super Locrian) across all 15 key signatures. We'll rely on my Balanced Scale Pairs System (see Reference A) to fully grasp these captivating scale patterns. We're going to structure our practice by starting with the single key signature containing no accidentals. From there, we'll work our way through the 7 key pairs, moving systematically from the 1-accidental pair all the way up to the 7-accidental pair.
Becoming fluent in the altered scale is an extremely powerful tool to add to the toolbox of a professional or amateur improvising musician. These seven-note (heptatonic) structures form a core part of the musical language in jazz, fusion, rock, R&B, and gospel music. Understanding these scales will give you a solid melodic base for soloing over altered dominant 7th chords. Once you internalize these shapes in every key, you'll have the vocabulary required to confidently navigate complex chord changes and craft engaging lines filled with sophisticated harmonic tension and release.
