Etude 552

I wrote Etude 552 to help master the art and craft of sight-reading swing rhythms in multiple keys, specifically moving through zero to seven flats. This exercise focuses entirely on sequential ii-V-I progressions descending through the flat keys. It is set in 4/4 time at a brisk 150 BPM and challenges you with syncopated swing eighths and triplets that cross the barline.

Practicing these fundamental chord changes across all the flat keys builds crucial interval recognition and deep muscle memory. That physical familiarity allows you to instantly process and execute complex syncopations when you are sight-reading tough jazz charts. Etude 1052

My goal with Etude 1052 was to write an etude with beautiful melodies and harmonies that still provides serious technical challenges. To build harmonic agility, the tonal center shifts back and forth between G major and F major every two measures.

In the second phrase, I applied my Balanced Scale Pairs system to contrast ascending arpeggios with voice-led descending lines that push right down to low B-flat. Beginners will build solid physical control and air support working through these ranges. Advanced players can focus on how the lines outline complex upper chord extensions.

The technical core hits in measures 9 through 12 with a descending tritone turnaround played in flowing triplets. By superimposing major triads over the minor 11 and dominant 13#11 chords, we pull out rich post-bop tensions using familiar three-note shapes. Etude 1052 will help you master these concepts across the entire horn in three octaves.

On a personal note, I have lately fallen in love with the sound of the alto saxophone accompanied by the nylon acoustic guitar.
